Festive Cranberry Custard and Vegan Neg-Nog Recipies!
Creamy Cranberry Custard:
3 cups almond milk (or any vegan milk you like)
4 Tablespoons custard powder (most custard powders are vegan by default)
3/4 cup raw, unsalted cashews
3 Tablespoons agave nectar (or 4 Tablespoons raw sugar)
1/2 cup dried cranberries (soak for 1/2 hour beforehand)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1.) Mix all of these ingredients (except for the cranberries), in a blender until very smooth and all the cashews bits are gone, and then pour it into a medium-sized pot.
2.) Whisk all of this mixture continuously in the pot on the stove at medium/low heat for several minutes until it becomes thick and creamy. Add the dried cranberries while you are whisking it. Dish it out into small bowls and then drizzle each one with either maple syrup or agave nectar (I forgot to do it for the photo but it looks really pretty when you do it). Very simple recipe. Makes 4 bowls of custard unless you use one cup of it for the neg-nog (recipe below), in which case it makes 3 bowls.
Creamy Vegan Neg-Nog:
2 cups almond milk (or whatever vegan milk you like)
1 cup raw (not roasted), unsalted cashews (soaked for 1/2 hour beforehand)
2 Tablespoons agave nectar (or 2 1/2 T raw sugar)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg (pushed through a fine sieve with a spoon to get rid of hard bits)
1 or 2 teaspoons rum flavouring (or add real rum if you like)
1 cup of custard from the recipe above before the cranberries are added (optional), but recommended for thicker, creamier texture.
10 ice cubes (added after the other ingredients have been blended)
1.) Mix all of the ingredients in a blender until it becomes creamy and rich.
2.) Add the 10 ice cubes and blend again.
3.) Top with freshly ground nutmeg and serve!

Vegan Children:
I found this website that has loads of photos and stories of beautiful vegan children, busting the myth that it is unsafe or unhealthy.

I would read differing opinions about soy though, before making up your mind on whether it is good for you and the planet or not (my site is dedicated to no-soy, or very little, because I am allergic to it (and so are millions of other people), and massive mono-crops of soy beans have required the clear-cutting forests at an incredible rate to meet the new demand). There are soooo many other proteins out there in nuts, seeds, grains, beans and much more, so experiment a little and have fun doing it!
Watch The Story of Stuff- good documentary.

The Money Masters Documentary: I know you might not understand the connection to veganism, but when you finish watching it you will be shaken:

It's a very long film, and has a bit of a strange character directing us through it, but I promise you that everyone on the planet needs to watch this in it's entirety. It is one of the most disturbing, eye opening films I've ever seen. Things I had no idea about were revealed very clearly and with well documented references to back it all up. It will change the way you look at everything. The website for the film is here.
A Question: Do you know what a vegan is? Pretty funny video and a not so funny picture::
Well... I found this photo of a man slaughtering a cow in front of what I imagine is his daughter, and it's not usually the kind of thing I post, but it was so striking to me. Most people do not want to think about what they are eating, or that their choices cause pain and suffering to others. This is not an abnormal or more cruel image of how a cow is killed and prepared for consumption, but meat eaters would find this offensive and most would not want to show their children. I was certainly not shown photos like this when I was young, and that's not a dig at my parents, but if I had I would have become vegan a lot earlier.
I remember when I was teaching a private art lesson to a kid Joshua's age (10 years old), in our home, and during the class Josh started preparing some veggie burgers on the stove. The kid asked Josh what he was making and he replied 'veggie burgers'. The kid asked him what a veggie burger was and Josh answered 'You know- a burger that doesn't have dead cows or pigs in it like regular hamburgers do'. The kid got this horrible look on his face and turned to his mother as if he was asking if he was telling the truth. She glared at me and I realized that this kid had no idea where hamburgers came from. I was shocked, but changed the subject quickly before I lost my student.
I say if you're going to feed your kids meat show them what it really is (why not take them to a slaughter house?), and then give them a delicious alternative. I guarantee you they'll make different choices.
Joshua Rose as The Bunnyman:
James and Josh made a video of still photographs put together (Josh is the guy in the bunny suit). It was pretty funny to get him to go around town dressed like that and we laughed so much during the making of it. There's no real reason for doing it- just a school project, but we had a good time.

Watch Big Sugar documentary:
"Big sugar used to make people very rich and it still does. It used to make people very poor and it still does. Now, it makes people fat and sick." –Brian McKenna

Big Sugar explores the dark history and modern power of the world's reigning sugar cartels. Using dramatic reenactments, it reveals how sugar was at the heart of slavery in the West Indies in the 18th century, while showing how present-day consumers are slaves to a sugar-based diet.
Going undercover, Big Sugar witnesses the appalling working conditions on plantations in the Dominican Republic, where Haitian cane cutters live like slaves. Workers who live on Central Romano, a Fanjul-owned plantation, go hungry while working 12-hour days to earn $2 (US). (Excerpt from video.google.com)
